Seaside Narrow-Gauge Railway

The Seaside Narrow-Gauge Railway takes its beginning at the end of the 19 th century, when the Prussian Parliament a resolution on building the first private railway. The first narrow-gauge railway line from Gryfice (prev. Greifenberg) to Niechorze (prev. Ostseebad Horst) was opened on July 1, 1896. Initially, the gauge was 750 mm., however, after reconstruction in 1912 it was widen to 1000 mm. In the same year, another coastal narrow-gauge railway line from Trzebiatów (prev. Treptow) to Mrzeżyno (prev. Ostseebad Deep) was built. The dynamic development of the railway in the previous century contributed to the bloom of economy and to the development of tourism in the region of West Pomerania. In 1913, the railway line from Niechorze to Trzebiatów was extended.

In the years 2011-2014, the EU project of revitalization of narrow-gauge railway and its infrastructure was carried out, historic railway carriages and 2 locomotives were renovated. The historic railway stations in Rewal and Pogorzelica were also restored and three brand new railway station buildings were built in Trzęsacz, Śliwin and Niechorze. As part of the project, new paved platforms, retro-style lamps, ticket offices and waiting rooms, as well as bicycle rental stations and accommodation places were built. Nowadays the Seaside Narrow-Gauge Railway is one of the main tourist attractions in in the region of West Pomerania.

The trains run on two routes: Gryfice – Pogorzelica (40 km long) and Trzęsacz- Pogorzelica (10 km long). The railway leads through picturesque landscapes of the municipalities of Gryfice, Karnice and Rewal. The trainset is driven by a diesel locomotive Lxd2 or optionally by a motor car Mbxd2. The main tourist attraction - historic steam locomotive Px48, built in 1950 in factory in Chrzanów is currently not in use due to ongoing renovation works.

Currently, the Seaside Narrow-Gauge is one of the most dynamically operating narrow-gauge railways in Poland. In addition to passenger transport, numerous events are organized at stations, such as animations for children, concerts and historical reconstructions. The narrow-gauge railway in Rewal is among the top three narrow-gauge railways in Poland in terms of passengers transported every year.

During the standard season, which starts in early May and lasts until the end of September, trains run on two routes every day. Leaving the locomotive depot in Gryfice in the morning, the train reaches Trzęsacz and makes five shuttle runs on the seaside section between Trzęsacz and Pogorzelica, and then returns to Gryfice on the last run in the evening.
